Prof. Asher Cohen, the President of the University, and Prof. Tamir Sheafer, the Rector of the University, met today with the 95 year old student of the University Mr. Chaim Shasha, to honor him as the eldest student of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, who holds no less than 6 academic degrees from the University.
Mr. Shasha was born in Iraq. He survived the Farhud against Iraqi Jews in 1941, escaped to Iran, moved to Israel and worked in agriculture. During his work, he was sent to Iran in 1961 as an agricultural advisor. His contributions to the field of cotton growing were covered in the Iranian press, where they even mentioned that he was Israeli.
After his retirement in 1996, at the age of 67, Mr. Shasha began studying and hasn’t stopped! So far, he has acquired 2 B.A.s and 4 M.A.s, and will be returning to campus next year as a free listener.
The Hebrew University is honored to have Mr. Chaim Shasha among their alumni.
