The ceremony was attended by the President of the University, Prof. Asher Cohen, the Director General and CEO of the University, Mr. Yishai Fraenkel, the Mayor of Jerusalem, Mr. Moshe Lion, and the CEO of the Jerusalem Development Authority.
The new building, 4,800 square metres, will include 36 teaching laboratories that will serve hundreds of students of electrical engineering, physics and chemistry. This building joins the first Brandman building that was inaugurated in 2011, and together they constitute one of the leading advanced science learning centers in Israel.
Establishing the building is thanks to the generous donation of Mrs. Joyce Brandman, in addition to her donation of 2 teaching buildings and a residential park on the Safra campus. Additional contributors are the Government of the State of Israel, the Jerusalem municipality, and the Jerusalem Development Authority, who helped via a special grant to encourage hi-tech and engineering studies.
Prof. Asher Cohen, President of the Hebrew University, said during the ceremony: “The education and training of undergraduate students in the fields of engineering and experimental sciences is the base for the continuation of the State of Israel’s growth as a start-up nation, and during the past year we’ve seen first-hand just how much they contribute to the country in a wide variety of ways. The building we are inaugurating here will allow the Hebrew University to continue its research activity in the fields of engineering and sciences, in a wider capacity and using more advanced tools, and establish its position as a leader of scientific and engineering research in Israel and the world. I am very grateful to Mrs. Joyce Brandman for her generous donations to the University, including this building, and am also grateful to the Jerusalem Development Authority and the Jerusalem Municipality for helping us in giving our students the best possible tools to train them for the future.”
