To The University Community,

On Friday, September 1, I began my tenure as the President of the Hebrew University. It is an honor to serve as the President of such a highly decorated and accomplished institution. We take pride in the Hebrew University's leading position among the academic institutions in Israel. Our scholars have conducted many innovative and groundbreaking researches. We have educated many generations of students who, along with our academic staff, contribute to the advancement of a wide range of fields within the Israeli society. It should be acknowledged that much of the university's ability to maintain its prestige over the years is due to the support students as well as scholars receive from the university's administrative and technical staff.

Nevertheless, the university currently faces great challenges. Over the past few years, we have had substantial financial difficulties that have hindered our ability to progress and develop in a manner befitting a leading institution. We are in the midst of negotiations with different departments of the state, and I believe that we will soon reach a settlement that would allow the university to preserve its position as a leading academic institution in Israel and across the world. I do not doubt we will reach such settlement; I believe that the State of Israel cannot allow for any other agreement. I intend to provide updates concerning the progression of this issue regularly, as well as inform of the main activities that take place in the.

In the upcoming years, I intend to continue to strengthen the connection with the students, and to increase the development of the university’s internationality. In addition, I aim to deepen the relationship between research and Activity, whilst preserving the scientific and cultural spirit ,which constitutes the foundation of a cultural and democratic society. These goals will ensure our ability to expose the Hebrew University to new and innovative academic spheres, both in teaching and research.

Finally, running a leading academic institution such as the Hebrew University is only possible with the active cooperation of its diverse community. I trust that we will all work together to build a future in which our university continues to constitute a central scientific and social pillar in Israel, and a leading academic institution across the world.

With best wishes for the New Year, a year of fulfillment and excellence,

Asher Cohen
